Breed: Maltese
:
The Maltese is an ancient breed, known in Mediterranean countries since the earliest times.
Small statues of Maltese were found in the tomb of Ramses II, who ruled from 1290 to 1223 B.C.
The breed became popular in Britain in the 1500s. perhaps earlier.
A Maltese first appeared in a North American Dog Show in 1877.
The Maltese is a little square dog with a well rounded head.
They stand up tot 10 inches high at the withers and weight between 4 and 9 pounds.
They have dark eyes, and a black nose, and their ears are flat (almost triangular) covered with long hair.
Their coat is white with long, straight, silky hair that requires extensive grooming to keep in top condition.
They can occassionally have slight lemon or beige markings.
Despite their small size, they are not weak dogs -- they love exercise.
They also enjoy attention and human company.
Maltese are intelligent, affectionate, good natured, and hardy dogs.
