Sirius of the Week for July 1 - 7, 2001

Jetty is a Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix, who looks like a Lab but with wavy hair. She is a very happy dog, always smiling at you with her tongue lolling out.

Jetty is a guard dog, no doubt about it. She is happiest when she is performing a job, and has made up some jobs on her own that her humans would have never thought of. Her main job is watching out for strangers, and she knows to bark once from the front door, then to come to her people for praise. No one walks by their house without their knowing it. Her oddest job, however, is monitoring the other pets in the house. Jetty's people have 30 other animals, and Jetty knows each of their routines. When one isn't doing what it's supposed to, she comes to tell someone. She makes a fuss until one of her humans follows her to see what's wrong. This includes cats in rooms that are off limits, or rodents that are awake when they usually sleep.

Jetty is sometimes found guarding a pile of bones and toys under a table, where she has gathered them. Her pack-mate, Cutter, could care less if she hoards every toy in the house, so they get along fine.

Another job of Jetty's is finding things. If you ask her "where's Daddy?" or "where's Cutter?" or "where's kitty?" she'll lead you right to them. This is useful when the cat is stuck in the closet. She has an excellent command of English, knowing the difference between Daddy, Jetty, Potty, Kitty, and Cutter.

The funniest job Jetty has is protecting "her" gerbils. The two gerbils live in a 50 gallon tank that sits on the floor in the living room, and of course the cats love to sit and watch them. Jetty, however, doesn't like them getting too close, and will leave a comfy spot on the couch to nose the cats away. Sometimes, when the gerbils are especially active, so that the cats are very interested, Jetty will park herself right next to the tank and whine if the cats get too close. She never hurts them, of course, being very gentle when playing with her kitties, even if excited.

When it comes to finding and guarding things or animals, Jetty's got it covered!
