Sirius of the Week for May 28 - June 3, 2000
The sixth Terrier in our series is an adorable West Highland
White Terrier named Arial, who is 2 years old.
Arial is new in the show ring, but she is already a tracking dog
with her Search and Rescue title. She is also an "earth dog" which
means she competes "hunting" rats. The rats are kept in cages, but they
are put in tunnels. The earth dogs have to find the rats, go down the
tunnels and bark at the rats.
Her mom says she is a little princess who loves dirt. Arial loves
attention and looks like a little darling, but she loves to chase
rabbits and squirrels and dig in the dirt.
Arial is also a smart dog who enjoys working on all her various
areas of competition. She works in agility, tracking, obedience,
and now showing. Arial is working toward a Versatile Dog award,
and she only needs one more title to get the award.
West Highland White Terriers have an overall square shape with a
straight back, deep chest, and powerful legs. They have a hard white
coat that is about 2 inches long, trimmed shorter along the back
and sides to blend into the shorter hair along the neck. A lot of
hair is left around the head to frame those cute Westie faces.
The coat also has a soft undercoat.
Westies are lively, happy and courageous dogs. They are tough
and self-reliant, but friendly.
