Sirius of the Week for Feb. 27 - Mar. 5, 2005
Our submitter writes,
"I got Chewbacca as a Christmas gift 7 years ago. One of the gifts under
the tree was a box that when I opened it, had some packing, and a few empty
bottles. I was a bit confused, but underneath that was Chewy's dog papers!
Then in came Chewy! He was hiding at the neighbors apartment until I opened
that box. It only took a couple hours and he was all mine! I came up with
his name quickly because I like big names for little dogs, and he had long
brown hair.. so Chewbacca fit!
"He loves going for walks, eating, of course, playing with other dogs, and
watching TV. He loves game shows. I guess the 'ding' sounds remind him of
the doorbell and he wags his tail and barks. Also, he likes to watch Animal
Planet and for some reason, 'The Teletubbies'. I don't get that one, but
he'll sit in front of the TV and stare at them, wag his tail, and bark. You
can actually see him doing that in one of the pics on his website. It's
really cute!
He knows how to sit, shake, high-five, roll over, play dead, speak, turn
around, and just learned how to "touch" (tap his paw) on something in front
of him. He also knows 'Speak' (Talk), and 'Sit' in sign language! One of our
neighbors is deaf so I've been trying to learn a little myself and thought
'Why not teach Chewy a few words too?'. He's so smart So far he only knows
two, but he still catches on real quick. And, despite what you hear about a lot of chi's, he's very friendly. He loves
kids. he gets all excited and runs to the door when he hears the little
neighbor boy outside."
Unfortunately, Chewbacca developed IMHA, which IMHA is a disease which
causes the immune system to attack its own red blood cells. His vet
bills were very high, but of course his person-mom willingly paid them
for Chewbacca's sake. But now, he has developed diabetes and perhaps
Cushing's disease, and has had a bad spell in the veterinary hospital.
